I love my leather laptop bag, but one day, it got a scratch while traveling with it on my bike. I recovered the scratch by filling it with paste but removed the original color of the leather bag. Then, one of my office colleagues recommended to re-color it with dye.

If you are in a similar situation, follow my advice. I will share a step-by-step guide to recolor leather using a filling paste. Additionally, I will also share the best leather dye and where to buy it. Please go through the blog to know these details.

What Material Supply You Need?

A Complete Guide to Recoloring Leather after Filling Paste

Filling a paste in your damaged leather product will make it usable again. You also need to recolor it using these simple steps to restore its shine:

Step 1: Prepare the Leather Surface

First, prepare the paste-filled leather surface by sanding it with fine sandpaper. Do this until the leather surface starts to fill with smoothness.

After that, wipe the sanded leather surface with a clean cloth to remove dirt and sanding debris. A clean and smooth leather surface can better absorb the color.

Step 2: Application of Color on the Leather Surface

Next, choose the best matching color for your leather item. Now, spread a thin layer of dye on the smooth past-filled surface of the leather.

You can apply the dye coat with a wool dauber applicator. It can make the job easy and smooth. Rub the applicator thoroughly on the leather surface to ensure an even application of dye.

Step 3: Allow the Dye to Dry

Leave the dyed leather surface for 15-20 minutes to dry it naturally in the open air. Note: You can also use a hair dryer to dry the leather surface. Use this hair dryer wisely, as it can over-dry or burn the leather product.

Step 4: Blending the Paste Filled Leather Surface

Next, blend the paste-filled leather surface with multiple coats of dye if needed. It may require five or more layers of dye (depending on the depth of the leather patch).

For each coat of dye, spread it in the center of the damaged part of the leather and then rub the surrounding part of the leather surface.

Note: Dry the leather surface each time in natural air or using a hairdryer.

Step 5: Sealing the Colored Leather Surface

In the final step, treat the dyed portion of the leather product with Leather Hero Satin Top Coat Leather Sealant and Protector. Spray this sealer directly on a sponge and rub it on the dyed portion of the leather surface. After that, dry the leather surface with a hairdryer.

Note: You can apply the second coat of sealer on the dyed leather portion for a better portion if needed.

Following this practical guide will help restore your leather product.
